Unemployment is a persistent issue in South Africa, with numbers climbing daily. It’s a problem that calls for collective action. Everyone must contribute, finding ways to make ends meet and support one another. One universal act of kindness that transcends cultures and generations is the act of tipping. Whether it's a car guard, a car washer, a window cleaner, a fuel attendant, or a charity, people offer their services hoping for a gratuity in return. However, as society moves towards a cashless economy, tipping has become increasingly challenging.
During and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the shift towards cashless transactions made it difficult to tip those who rely on these small acts of generosity. No longer could people simply hand over their spare change. This realization struck one of the Tap2Tip™ founders profoundly during the Cape Town Cycle Tour. Unable to tip a volunteer who had been watching over her bicycle, she experienced a moment of frustration and embarrassment. It was in this moment that the idea for Tap2Tip™ was born—a universal cashless tipping solution that is cost-effective, easy to use, and widely accessible.
